There has recently been an article published in the New York Times that calls attention to an important issue – brands are not accurately displaying the amount of melatonin in their products. To summarize the article, a new study by researchers at Harvard Medical School has revealed that the melatonin dose advertised on labels of different gummy supplements may not be accurate, with 22 out of 25 of these products tested showing varying levels of melatonin. The study, which was published in the medical journal JAMA, found that one product was found to contain only 74% of the advertised amount, while another constrained 347%. One product did not even contain any detectable levels of melatonin at all. Melatonin supplements are increasing in popularity, and it’s so important in our day and age to be able to trust the companies we are buying from.
Importance of Supplement Quality Control
According to a study posted in the National Library of Medicine, almost 66% of American adults consider themselves to be supplement users. With the number of supplement users constantly rising, supplement quality control is becoming increasingly more important. Supplement quality control refers to the measures taken by different manufacturers to ensure that their dietary supplements meet certain standards of quality, purity, and safety. This process involves meticulous testing of materials and finished products to ensure that they contain the advertised amount of ingredients the labels claim, and to ensure that they are free from harmful contaminants.
Having quality control on our supplements is important for a number of reasons. It firstly guarantees that consumers are receiving supplements that are proven safe and effective, as well as labeled accurately. Quality control also helps prevent the sale of mislabeled supplements, which could cause consumers to have potentially negative side effects. Quality control on supplements is also important in building trust with the brand’s customers, as they establish themselves as a reputable brand when their labels are accurate.
Companies should be aiming to have the highest quality supplements they can provide. Some steps they can take to ensure this include:
Sourcing High Quality Ingredients: Ingredients should be sourced that are pure, safe, and effective in order to be of the highest quality. Companies can partner with reputable brands and suppliers that have a past with providing high quality ingredients and products.
Conduct Meticulous Testing: Companies should conduct meticulous testing of their products, as well as have a COA, or certificate of analysis, done for each product they put out. This COA typically includes tests done on weight variation, microbial testing, heavy metal testing, active ingredients per tablet, and disintegration.
Follow Best Manufacturing Practices: Companies should always follow strict manufacturing practices to ensure consistent product quality across all of their products. This includes properly storing and handling materials, maintaining clean manufacturing areas, and using certified manufacturing processes.
Follow Regulatory Requirements: Companies should adhere to all regulatory requirements for supplement manufacturing and labeling. This includes complying with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPS), which according to a study found in the
